What’s in our Mobile Plant Rooms
UK HVAC specialises in the design and build of Mobile Plant Rooms as previous blogs have discussed. While the majority of our Mobile Plant Rooms have wall-hung condensing boilers, some have contained traditional shell and tube units.
Shell and tube vs condensing boilers
Shell and Tube vs Condensing boilers. The first difference to point out is the clear visual difference. Our wall-hung units are usually smaller modular units. Often in an arrangement of 4-6 separate units whose appearance is very similar to the boilers we may see in people’s homes. They are usually white and are reminiscent of the white goods we have in our kitchens.
Shell and tube boilers (see featured image) are larger units that virtue of their size and configuration, are sited on the floor. They have a larger capacity than one of our single condensing units. They are therefore larger and heavier. This means that just one boiler per trailer if it’s a shell and tube design usually.
For some organisations, it is simply not a choice. They must have condensing boilers due to local legislation. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/emissions-of-air-pollutants/emissions-of-air-pollutants-in-the-uk-nitrogen-oxides-nox
So where the Mobile Plant Room is going plays a part in a customer’s choice. The condensing unit is more efficient than the shell and tube therefore less polluting to the environment. It doesn’t need as much fuel (ie; natural gas) to operate therefore producing lower emissions.
There are still arguments for the use of shell and tube boilers. One argument could simply be down to cost. Despite the saving in fuel, the customer may find the initial outlay over thier cap ex budget. There is a prevailing belief that shell and tube boilers have a longer lifespan than their condensing cousins. Some of this will take time to prove.
Ultimately, where you are, your budget and your personal preferences will dictate what type of boiler you want in your Mobile Plant Room.
